When Is the Best Time for a 3D Ultrasound? A Week-by-Week Guide

The best time for a 3D ultrasound is usually between 26 and 30 weeks. That's when most babies have enough fat under the skin for full cheeks and clear facial features, but still have room to move. Earlier sessions have their own magic, though, so the right week depends on what you want to see.

Here's what a 3D ultrasound looks like at each stage, and which session at Mother Goose fits each one.

3D Ultrasound at 14 to 17 Weeks: First Look and Gender

At 14 weeks your baby is small enough to fit on the screen all at once, so you can watch the whole body kick, stretch and wiggle. Facial features are still developing and look more delicate than chubby.

This is also when you can find out boy or girl. Gender determination at Mother Goose starts at 14 weeks with The Character Reveal ($125), which is why so many parents book an early gender ultrasound as their first 3D session.

  • See the whole baby on screen at once

  • Gender determination from 14 weeks

  • Hear baby's heartbeat

3D Ultrasound at 18 to 25 Weeks: Features Take Shape

Between 18 and 25 weeks, your baby's nose, lips and fingers become easier to make out, and you'll often catch hiccups, yawns and thumb-sucking in 4D. Baby is still lean, so faces look slimmer than they will in the third trimester.

The Narrative ($135) is built for this window and includes gender determination or confirmation. It's a great choice if you want to find out boy or girl together with family in the room.

3D Ultrasound at 26 to 30 Weeks: The Sweet Spot

If your main goal is a lifelike picture of your baby's face, aim for 26 to 30 weeks. Searches for a 3D ultrasound at 28 weeks and 30 weeks are popular for a reason: baby has filled out, cheeks are round, and there's usually still enough amniotic fluid in front of the face for a clear view.

The Illustrated Chapter ($175) is our longest session at 30 minutes and is designed for 26+ weeks. It's also the best session to pair with a Hyper Realistic 8K enhancement, since 8K is created from your clearest 3D image.

  • Fuller cheeks and the most facial detail

  • Longest session: 30 minutes

  • Ideal for 8K and HD live images

3D Ultrasound After 32 Weeks: Possible, but Crowded

You can still get beautiful images after 32 weeks, but baby has less room. Faces are more likely to be tucked against the placenta, a hand or the uterine wall, and baby may already be head-down and low. If you're past 32 weeks, book sooner rather than later.

Quick Answer: Which Week Should You Book?

  • Want to know the gender as early as possible? 14 weeks or later.

  • Want gender plus a look at baby's features? 18 to 25 weeks.

  • Want the most lifelike face? 26 to 30 weeks.

  • Want all of it? The Complete Anthology package covers three sessions for $345.

How to Get the Clearest 3D Images

The single biggest factor you control is hydration. Drink plenty of water in the days before your visit. Good hydration supports healthy amniotic fluid levels, which helps create clearer images. Wear something cozy that allows easy access to your belly.

Baby's position, placenta location and fluid levels also affect what we can capture. Molly takes her time and works to encourage baby into a better position. If baby stays camera-shy and we can't obtain images, one complimentary return visit may be offered at the sonographer's discretion.

Meet Molly Mann, RDMS

As a registered diagnostic medical sonographer with over seven years of experience in clinical OB/GYN and pediatric ultrasound I have dedicated my career to precision imaging.  But, as a wife and mother of three, I have decided to dedicate my heart to the magic of it.

I founded Mother Goose Ultrasound Boutique alongside my husband, Nick, in our hometown of Roswell, Georgia. We began with a vision to create something different- an elevated experience where expectant mothers can slow down, relax and truly enjoy every second of seeing their unborn baby. We envision an intentional departure from the clinical haste of the traditional medical setting. Mother Goose is a place where time slows down and every mother is provided with a luxurious and comfortable space designed for connection, celebration and unforgettable bonding.
