3D vs 4D vs 5D vs 8K Ultrasound: What’s the Difference?

A 3D ultrasound is a still, lifelike image of your baby. A 4D ultrasound is 3D in motion. "5D" is a marketing name for HD live rendering, and 8K is an artistic enhancement created from a 3D image. They aren't separate machines or separate levels of medical imaging. They're different ways of displaying the same ultrasound data.

Here's what each term means in plain English, so you can decide what's worth booking.

2D Ultrasound: The Classic Black-and-White View

2D is the flat, black-and-white image you've seen at your doctor's office. It shows cross-sections through baby's body, which makes it the best view for the heartbeat, internal structures and confirming gender. Every session at Mother Goose uses 2D, including our early pregnancy heartbeat ultrasound for 6 to 13 weeks.

3D Ultrasound: A Still Photo of Your Baby

3D ultrasound stacks many 2D slices into a single image with depth and volume. The result looks like a sepia-toned photograph of baby's face, button nose and delicate hands. It's the image most parents frame.

4D Ultrasound: 3D in Real Time

4D adds the fourth dimension: time. Instead of a still image, you watch live 3D video of baby yawning, stretching, smiling or sucking a thumb. If you're comparing 3D vs 4D ultrasound, the honest answer is that you don't have to choose. Every 3D/4D ultrasound session at Mother Goose includes both.

What Is a 5D Ultrasound?

5D is not a fifth dimension. It's a marketing name some studios use for HD live rendering, which uses a virtual light source and advanced processing to create richer, more natural skin tones and shadows. The underlying scan is the same 3D/4D ultrasound.

At Mother Goose we call it what it is: HD live imaging. If a studio charges extra for "5D," ask whether it's the same HD live rendering you'd get elsewhere.

What Is an 8K Ultrasound?

An 8K ultrasound isn't a scan either. Hyper Realistic 8K starts with one of your clearest 3D images, then advanced imaging technology creates a detailed, lifelike interpretation of your baby. At Mother Goose it's professionally enhanced after your session and delivered the same day, as an image or video.

One important note: 8K images are artistic enhancements. They are not an exact representation or prediction of what your baby will look like. Learn more about our 8K and HD live ultrasound add-ons.

Side-by-Side Comparison

  • 2D: Black-and-white cross-sections. Best for heartbeat and gender.

  • 3D: Still, photo-like image with depth.

  • 4D: Live 3D video in real time.

  • HD live ("5D"): 3D/4D with advanced lighting for more natural skin tones.

  • 8K: Artistic enhancement of your clearest 3D image, delivered same day.

Which One Should You Choose?

If you want to find out the gender, every option starts with 2D, so book an ultrasound to find out baby's gender from 14 weeks. If you want to see your baby's face, any 3D/4D session gets you 3D, 4D and HD live together. If you want the most lifelike keepsake, add 8K to a session at 26+ weeks, when baby's cheeks have filled out. Our guide to the best week for a 3D ultrasound breaks down the timing.

What Does Each Cost?

At Mother Goose, 3D/4D sessions are $125 to $175 depending on how far along you are, and 8K is an add-on. Compare every option on our 3D ultrasound prices and packages page.

Molly Mann

Meet Molly Mann, RDMS

As a registered diagnostic medical sonographer with over seven years of experience in clinical OB/GYN and pediatric ultrasound I have dedicated my career to precision imaging.  But, as a wife and mother of three, I have decided to dedicate my heart to the magic of it.

I founded Mother Goose Ultrasound Boutique alongside my husband, Nick, in our hometown of Roswell, Georgia. We began with a vision to create something different- an elevated experience where expectant mothers can slow down, relax and truly enjoy every second of seeing their unborn baby. We envision an intentional departure from the clinical haste of the traditional medical setting. Mother Goose is a place where time slows down and every mother is provided with a luxurious and comfortable space designed for connection, celebration and unforgettable bonding.
