6 to 8 Week Ultrasound: What You’ll See and Hear
At a 6 week ultrasound, you may see a small gestational sac and a tiny flicker of baby's heartbeat. By 8 weeks, baby is about the size of a raspberry, the heartbeat is easier to see and hear, and you may even catch a little movement. A week or two makes a big difference this early, so here's what to expect at each stage.
What You'll See at a 6 Week Ultrasound
At 6 weeks, your baby measures only a few millimeters, about the size of a lentil. On a 2D ultrasound you'll typically see:
The gestational sac, a dark, round space
The yolk sac, a small bright circle that nourishes baby early on
A tiny fetal pole, the first visible shape of your baby
Often, a fast flicker of cardiac activity
It's common for the heartbeat to be hard to see at 6 weeks, especially if your dates are a few days off. Ovulation doesn't always happen exactly when a calendar predicts, so "6 weeks" can really be 5 and a half. If you want the best chance of a clear first look, 7 to 8 weeks is often worth the wait.
What You'll See at a 7 Week Ultrasound
At 7 weeks, baby has roughly doubled in size. The heartbeat is usually easier to spot, and a measurement from head to bottom (called crown-rump length) can be used to estimate your due date.
What You'll See at an 8 Week Ultrasound
By 8 weeks, baby is about the size of a raspberry, with a distinct head and tiny buds that will become arms and legs. The heartbeat is strong and fast, and you may see small movements. Many parents find the 8 week ultrasound is the first one that really feels like "meeting" their baby.
Will I Hear the Heartbeat?
Usually, yes, once cardiac activity is visible. Listening to baby's heartbeat is included in The First Chapter, our early pregnancy ultrasound in Roswell for 6 to 13 weeks. If the heartbeat isn't visible yet, it's often simply too early. Your medical provider is the right person to follow up on anything that needs a closer look.
Elective vs. Medical First Ultrasound
Your OB or midwife may schedule a dating scan between 8 and 12 weeks. Many parents don't want to wait that long, or want a calmer, unhurried first look with their partner. That's where a private elective ultrasound fits in: it's a keepsake session for bonding, not a replacement for prenatal care.
At Mother Goose, The First Chapter is a private 15-minute session for $85 that includes:
2D imaging of your baby
Listening to baby's heartbeat
A measurement for due-date prediction
4 printed images, plus digital delivery
How to Prepare for Your First Ultrasound
Drink plenty of water in the days before your visit and wear something comfortable that allows easy access to your belly. Bring your partner or a support person; family and friends are always welcome in our studio.
What Comes After Your First Ultrasound?
At 14 weeks, you can come back for a 14 week gender scan and your first 3D look at baby's face. Planning to see baby more than once? The Complete Anthology, one of our ultrasound package deals, bundles The First Chapter, The Character Reveal and The Illustrated Chapter for $345, compared with $385 booked separately.
